When Salem makes a secret phone call to the Psychic Pals network, he thinks no one will ever find out. But after Zelda gets the phone bill, he's in the doghouse--and the obvious payback is cat chores! How can he get rich quick? By starting his own psychic hot line, of course. There's only one problem: Advising on the sly isn't always easy, especially when a shy mystery calls with a major love dilemma. Can Salem see into the future and predict romance? Not if Sabrina's aunts can help it. Locked out of the phone, he asks Sabrina for help and together they discover the meaning of true love...and the joy of call waiting.

The Salem Witch Trials (Kaleidoscope)
Published in Library Binding by Benchmark Books (September, 2001)
Author: Edward F. Dolan
Average review score:

An excellent juvenile history of the Salem Witch Trials
I saw an interesting documentary on PBS making the argument that the visions reported and the convulsions observed by the young girls who causes the Salen Witch Trials were caused by rye infected with the key ingredient in LSD. So I was curious to see how this particular black spot on American history (pre-American history?) was being explained to young students. Edward F. Dolan makes the attempt in "The Salem Witch Trials" for Kaleidoscope.

This book certainly does not pull any punches in terms of providing details, naming names and such. Dolan makes it clear that the Puritans really did believe there were witches and pays some attention to exactly what that meant during those times. Consequently, Dolan is able to explain why certain women were obvious victims for the hysteria that came to pass. If anything, Doran pays less attention to the young girls who made the accusations and more to how the accused were tried, convicted and executed, which certainly seems appropriate all things considered. This book is illustrated with historic etchings and paintings, some rather contemporary I would imagine, as well as a photograph of one of the gravestones of a man pressed to death because he would not confess. This book is much more informative than one usually finds for this grade level and does an excellent job of not only relating the event, but explaining it and assessing its key parts. Dolan even makes an effort to end on an optimistic note by saying the trials had a healthy effect on the country as American law took a major step away from superstition.

Salem Witchcraft
This is a reprint of Upham's two-volume book originally published in 1867. It is the definitive work on the witch hunt of 1692 and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the Salem trials.

The Salem Witchcraft Papers: Verbatim Transcripts of the Legal Documents of the Salem Witchcraft Outbreak of 1692

Please Reprint This!!
This is the most important and accessable resourse for anyone intersested in the Salem Witch Trials. It seems a real shame that a person can buy Journey albumn released ten years ago but books go out of print so quickly, especially books as vital as this one. Let's hope the publish on demand people flourish!
